How to Optimize DXF Files for CNC, Laser & Plasma Cutting
Use the Free DXF CNC File Optimizer above to inspect and prepare DXF geometry before manufacturing. The tool can help identify splines, duplicate entities, open contours and tiny geometry, then convert supported curved geometry into cleaner CNC-friendly lines and circular arcs. For accurate results, use conservative tolerances and always inspect the optimized DXF in your CAD or CAM software before cutting.
Recommended DXF Optimizer Settings
These settings are a practical starting point for accurate DXF optimization. Very small or highly detailed drawings may require different values.
Controls how close endpoints may be before they are treated as connected. Start around 0.05–0.10 mm. Avoid large values that could join separate contours.
Closes very small gaps in contours. Start around 0.10–0.20 mm. Increase carefully so intentional openings are not closed.
Controls how accurately SPLINE geometry is sampled before fitting. For high-detail CNC files, 0.01 mm is a strong starting value.
Limits how far optimized LINE and ARC geometry may deviate from the original sampled curve. Start with 0.01 mm for high shape accuracy.
Uses straight LINE geometry on straight regions and true circular ARC geometry where the original curve supports it, helping reduce unnecessary vertices.
Controls curve fitting and smoothing accuracy. A value around 0.01 mm is a useful starting point when preserving the original design is important.
Optional. When enabled, eligible sharp corners can receive adaptive tangent radii. Leave it off when the original sharp corners must remain unchanged.
Sets the angle threshold for optional corner rounding. 90° is a practical starting point; always inspect narrow details afterward.
Radius strength uses nearby geometry to choose a suitable radius. 6% strength and 0.15 mm minimum radius are conservative starting values.
Free DXF CNC Optimizer FAQ
What does the Free DXF CNC File Optimizer do?
It analyzes supported DXF geometry for common CNC preparation issues such as splines, duplicate entities, open contour candidates and tiny geometry. During optimization it can convert supported curved geometry into connected CNC-friendly geometry using lines and circular arcs while trying to preserve the original shape.
Why convert DXF splines to lines and arcs?
Many CNC, laser and plasma workflows are easier to process when cutting paths use simpler geometry such as connected polylines, straight lines and circular arcs. Reducing unnecessary vertices can also make files cleaner and easier to inspect.
What is the best spline tolerance for DXF optimization?
There is no universal value for every drawing, but 0.01 mm is a useful high-accuracy starting point for detailed files. Lower tolerances generally preserve more detail but may require more geometry.
What does Maximum shape deviation mean?
Maximum shape deviation limits how far fitted geometry may move from the sampled original curve. A smaller value prioritizes shape accuracy; a larger value may allow fewer segments but can change the design more noticeably.
Can this tool reduce the number of points in a DXF file?
Yes, supported geometry can be fitted with longer LINE and ARC segments where the original shape allows it. The goal is to reduce unnecessary vertices without intentionally changing the design.
Can I use the optimized DXF for plasma and laser cutting?
The optimizer is intended to help prepare files for CNC, laser and plasma workflows, but automatic optimization cannot guarantee manufacturing readiness for every drawing. Always inspect contours, dimensions and toolpaths in your CAD/CAM software before production.
Are my DXF files uploaded to a server?
The optimizer is designed to process the selected DXF locally in your browser. Your drawing does not need to be uploaded to Cut Files Shop for the geometry calculations.
Should I verify the DXF after optimization?
Yes. Always open the downloaded file in compatible CAD/CAM software and check the complete drawing, closed contours, small features, dimensions and cutting paths before sending the file to a machine.
